Longing to Befriend
Longing To Befriend
How to love what is unknown
And for another’s heart to groan
So that you ache in every bone
With longing to befriend.
How to endear what’s never met
And care so much for one who yet
Could care less you exist. To fret
With longing to befriend.
How to pour out a soul of prayer
For that one’s heart which beats somewhere
With no feeling for all your care –
Your longing to befriend.
How to remain steadfast and true
To someone who knows naught of you
Who has no sight of what you do
With longing to befriend.
How to affix one’s weary eyes
Upon a star set in the skies
Ne’er to be reached. Your failing cries
That long to just befriend.
How to hold in this passionate
Heart and all unfortunate
Ways that part the soul of it
From longing to befriend.
How to give enough that you prove
The purity of your great love
So that the stars and sun would move
With longing to befriend.
How to hold on and love aright
Even as creatures of the night
Would blight your joy and snuff your light,
From longing to befriend.
How – ask I how? I need to know!
I need to hold and let him go!
I try and yet can only grow
With longing to befriend.
