Beauty’s Contradiction

There is a sweet sorrow that does not steal breath;
That does not make hearts ache nor wish for swift death.

There is a sad rapture that smiles, but not quite;
That is not bright golden, but soft blue and white.

There is a fair loneliness that does not ache;
That makes the heart peaceful, nor does the soul break.

There is a good weariness that is all calm;
That heartens the soul and is a healing balm.

There is a bright a pain that, though making me cry,
Is better than bliss and so sweet I could die.

There is a right reason for letting all go,
But it is so high and wondrous we can’t know.
